Artist Statement:

I am interested in the way things look when people aren't there to see them. My work is a collaboration between myself and what surrounds me. The landscape of my images is always a product of men and time. It is often the persistence of nature in a man-made environment. It is a wall lost to the weeds, the shy crawl of an afternoon shadow, new paint worn through to old. I like what happens to these collaborations once men have lost interest, what happens in the after hours and the off seasons. I watch the way the margins arrange themselves once men have turned their backs.

I like the objects that look back at you. The blank back walls of buildings have eyes. I'm attracted to those infused with their own meaning. I will listen to them. I don't want just to render them, I want to paint their portraits. I want to allow them all the space they need, to say what they will. I look for the objects that command those around them, I will let them dominate their frame. I will love their colors.

I think perfect moments are all around us, everywhere. There are paintings and sculptures made by no one person, by time and by weather, by the neglect and care of people in alternating layers. There is reverence in a marred umbrella discarded on a sideline. I want to show you the painting I found on a wall that painted itself, the time I locked eyes with a black rabbit on a back road.
